1. What is industrial electrical preventive maintenance?
Industrial electrical preventive maintenance is the planned inspection, testing and servicing of electrical equipment before a failure occurs. It can include infrared thermography, circuit breaker testing, insulation resistance testing, connection resistance testing, switchgear maintenance and equipment condition assessments.
A structured maintenance program helps facilities identify deterioration earlier, improve equipment reliability and schedule repairs before an electrical issue interrupts production.
2. Why is electrical preventive maintenance important?
Electrical equipment can continue operating while serious issues develop beneath the surface. Loose connections, deteriorating insulation, contamination, excessive heat and worn protective devices may not be visible during normal operation.

3. How often should industrial electrical maintenance be performed?
Maintenance frequency depends on the equipment type, manufacturer recommendations, operating environment, equipment condition, maintenance history and the consequences of failure.

Equipment operating continuously, supporting critical production or exposed to dust, moisture, heat or vibration may require more frequent maintenance. 4. Can preventive electrical maintenance reduce unplanned downtime?
Yes. Preventive and predictive maintenance help identify developing problems before they become failures. This allows facilities to prioritize repairs and complete them during scheduled maintenance windows instead of responding after production has already stopped.
No maintenance program can eliminate every failure, but a structured program can significantly reduce avoidable risk.
5. What can electrical infrared thermography detect?
Electrical infrared thermography can identify abnormal heat patterns caused by loose connections, overloaded circuits, phase imbalance, failing breakers, damaged contacts and other developing equipment problems.
Infrared inspections are generally performed while equipment is energized and operating under load, allowing technicians to identify conditions that may not be visible when the equipment is shut down.
6. Why is circuit breaker testing important?
Circuit breakers are intended to interrupt electrical faults and protect people, equipment and the electrical system. Mechanical wear, contamination, corrosion and internal component problems can affect breaker performance over time.
Testing and maintenance help verify that breakers remain capable of operating correctly when they are needed.
7. How does electrical maintenance improve workplace safety?
Electrical maintenance helps identify conditions that may increase the risk of shock, arc flash, fire or equipment failure. These conditions can include loose connections, deteriorating insulation, overheating, damaged protective devices and contaminated equipment.
Maintenance does not replace safe work procedures, training or appropriate personal protective equipment, but it is an essential part of creating a safer electrical system.
8. Can regular electrical maintenance help reduce arc-flash risk?
Regular maintenance can reduce the likelihood of equipment conditions that may contribute to an electrical fault or prevent protective devices from operating properly.
Electrical maintenance is only one part of arc-flash risk management. Facilities must also consider worker training, safe work procedures, system studies, equipment labelling, protective-device settings and appropriate personal protective equipment.
Arc-flash studies are a critical part of electrical safety and are mandated in order support compliance with applicable workplace safety regulations and recognized electrical safety standards. 9. What does QEMC stand for?
QEMC stands for Qualified Electrical Equipment Maintenance Company.
The qualification is administered by the InterNational Electrical Testing Association, known as NETA. It recognizes companies that have completed a standardized organizational review and demonstrated defined electrical equipment maintenance capabilities, safety practices, quality systems and qualified workers.
